Things to Do on Christmas in Sydney: A Step-by-Step Guide
The best things to do on Christmas in Sydney are outdoor ones, such as a harbour walk, a beach or a park picnic, because many paid tours and shows do not run on 25 December. Fireworks light the harbour at 9 pm and midnight on New Year's Eve, and most of the best views are free. The steps below cover dates, Christmas Day, transport, where to watch the fireworks, paid options and where to stay.
Christmas in Sydney falls in early summer, so the city is warm, busy and mostly outdoors. This guide takes you through six steps: the dates, Christmas Day, transport, the fireworks, paid options and where to sleep. Nothing here needs a tour, because free parks, beaches and the Martin Place tree cover most of it, and the paid options come after the free ones. Do it yourself for Christmas Day and for the fireworks from a free park. Pay only if you want a seat, food and a dry spot on 31 December, and the guide says which tours are new, unreviewed or not refundable.
| Step | What to do | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Set your dates and budget | December hotel nights cost more than April |
| 2 | Plan Christmas Day outdoors | Some tours and zoos change their hours |
| 3 | Plan transport | Public holiday fares, and tap off every trip |
| 4 | Pick a fireworks spot | Free spots fill up, some are ticketed |
| 5 | Decide on a paid night | Cruises and the opera sell early |
| 6 | Fill the other holiday nights | Check dates before you book |
Step 1: Set your dates and your budget for a December stay
A December stay in Sydney costs more than a stay in the quiet months, so book early. In December, a 4-star hotel night in Greater Sydney cost a median $235, against $193 in April, in the 2026 Sydney Travel Cost Study.
The two key dates are 25 December and 31 December. On Christmas Day most people head outdoors. On New Year's Eve the City of Sydney runs fireworks at 9 pm and at midnight. The 9 pm show is the one many families pick.
Pick hotels with care. Stays near the harbour are in demand on 31 December. Three well-rated options are The Sebel Quay West Suites Sydney and Shangri-La Sydney in The Rocks, and The Darling at The Star at Darling Harbour. The Rocks has no Christmas events on its official what's on page yet. Its market page lists Friday 10am to 3pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm, and 25 December 2026 is a Friday, but the page does not say if the markets trade on that day, so ask The Rocks through the contact page on therocks.com before you plan around them. Its market overview page names no Christmas closure either, so treat Christmas Day trading as unconfirmed and not as closed. Treat The Rocks as a base for the harbour and not as a Christmas event spot. Our where to stay in Sydney guide compares the areas.
On 31 December you can watch the fireworks free from a public spot, or book a cruise or the opera night (see Steps 4 and 5).
Key Takeaway Book a bed for 31 December first, because a 4-star night in December cost a median $235 on the nights we sampled.
Step 2: Choose things to do on Christmas Day in Sydney
The easiest things to do on Christmas Day in Sydney are free and outdoors: a harbour walk, a picnic in a park or a swim. Many paid sights shorten their hours or close, so check each one for 25 December.
Here is what we could confirm:
- Opera House tours: The Opera House says there are no tours on 25 and 31 December 2026. You can still walk around the forecourt for free.
- Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park: It closes at 2 pm on Christmas Day, with last entry at 1 pm, according to its visit page.
- Martin Place: The City of Sydney lists a free Christmas tree from 26 November 2026 to 5 January 2027, with a light show every night from 8 pm to midnight. The listing does not mention Christmas Day. The Christmas Markets there run to 24 December, so they are closed on the day.
- Darling Harbour: Its official page lists a Christmas Festival from 19 December, with live performances and Santa, but gives no end date, year, times, prices or Christmas Day programme, so what runs on 25 December is not published. The one Darling Harbour venue that Destination NSW lists as open on Christmas Day is Sea Life Sydney Aquarium. The page's only December dates are the Christmas Festival (19 December) and the Cockle Bay fireworks on 31 December. To ask, use the event page on darlingharbour.com or its contact details.
- The Rocks: Its official page lists no Christmas events. The markets run Friday 10am to 3pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm, and 25 December 2026 is a Friday, but the page does not say if they trade that day. Ask through therocks.com.
- Open on 25 December (Destination NSW, 2025 page): The Destination NSW guide at sydney.com lists Sea Life Sydney Aquarium at Darling Harbour as open, Taronga Zoo with a Christmas buffet, and BridgeClimb open every day of the year. It gives no 2026 hours or prices, so check each venue's own page.
- BridgeMuseum: It stays open, and its plan your visit page lists a 20 percent peak surcharge from 25 December to 4 January.
For a swim, our guide to Bondi Beach covers the beach and the coastal walk. For more ideas that cost nothing, see our list of free things to do in Sydney.
No official source gives a total cost for a Christmas visit, so add up the published pieces yourself: a 4-star hotel night median from Step 1, a public holiday fare cap of A$9.65 per adult per day from Step 3, and, if you want a paid night, the "from" prices in Step 5 (€80.94, €244.08 or €815.06 per person). As a worked example from those published pieces, a free outdoor Christmas Day costs at most A$9.65 per adult for transport, and each hotel night adds the December median from Step 1. Free outdoor options cost nothing beyond transport. For a day of free sights, the published transport cost is at most A$9.65 per adult, because the Friday and public holiday cap applies on 25 December 2026.
Pro Tip Book lunch for Christmas Day weeks ahead, and keep the afternoon free for a beach or a park.
Step 3: Plan how you will get around
Public transport on Christmas Day uses the public holiday fare, and it is not free. The Transport for NSW fares page caps an adult at A$9.65 a day on public holidays, the same as Friday to Sunday. It also gives 30 percent off train, metro, bus and light rail trips outside the peak.
Transport for NSW has not published a 2026 Christmas Day timetable on its fares page or its alerts page, so we could not confirm which services run on 25 December 2026. Last year's pattern is published: its summer holiday page for 25 December 2025 lists Metro on a public holiday timetable with a train every 10 minutes from 5am to 12.30am, Sydney and Intercity trains on a modified Saturday timetable, and ferries on a public holiday timetable, with F1 Manly modified and F3 Parramatta River not running. Treat that as a guide to the likely pattern, not as a 2026 promise. Because 25 December 2026 is a Friday and a public holiday, the A$9.65 cap applies either way, and the weekly cap is A$50. The official next step is the Trip Planner at transportnsw.info for your exact trip, or the Transport for NSW travel alerts page closer to the date. Have a taxi or rideshare plan for late trips.
Pay with an Opal card or a contactless bank card, and tap off at the end of each trip. Our getting around Sydney guide explains the caps in full.
On New Year's Eve, expect big crowds near the harbour. The official New Year's Eve site says extra trains and thousands of extra bus services run, many roads close, and public transport is the only way to travel. It does not list free travel. Leave early and walk the last part.
Step 4: Pick a place to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks
The best way to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks for free is from a public park on the harbour, and you should arrive early. The official site lists 48 vantage points, and fireworks light the harbour at 9 pm and midnight.
The official vantage points page lists these free spots:
| Spot | What the official page says |
|---|---|
| Bennelong Lawn | Views of the Harbour Bridge from right above the Opera House |
| Hickson Road Reserve | At the foot of the Harbour Bridge, with the Opera House ahead |
| Campbells Cove | Great views of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House |
| Darling Harbour | Fireworks at 9 pm and midnight over Cockle Bay |
| Circular Quay East | Bridge views, but no view of the Opera House |
Some spots need a ticket. The Opera House Forecourt has free but ticketed entry, and Blues Point, Luna Park and Taronga Zoo are paid. Several islands and headlands, such as Bradleys Head and Cockatoo Island, were sold out when we checked. Darling Harbour, Pirrama Park and Birchgrove Park are listed as family friendly.
In The Rocks, Campbells Cove and Hickson Road Reserve are the free harbour spots. At Darling Harbour the fireworks are over Cockle Bay.
One honest limit applies. Free spots fill up and nobody can promise you a space, so arrive in the morning and bring water and sun cover.
The best view is the one you reach early.
Step 5: Decide whether a paid New Year's Eve night is worth it
A paid New Year's Eve night is worth it if you want a seat, food and a dry spot, and not worth it if you only want to see the fireworks. A free park does that job, but you stand for many hours.
Things to Do in Sydney's count of GetYourGuide listings on 25 October 2026 found 4 of 298 that mention Christmas or New Year, from €109.80 to €815.06.
The New Year's Eve dinner and drinks cruise starts from €815.06 per person. It runs 6.5 hours, takes up to 50 people and leaves from Neutral Bay Wharf (the other two tours below do not state a group size). It includes food, a drinks package and a welcome glass of bubbles. It is a new listing with no reviews yet, and it is not refundable, so read the terms first. It is run by Barefoot Whale watching Sydney, and the listing names nothing as excluded.
For an evening on land, New Year's Eve at the Opera House with La Bohème starts from €244.08 per person. Opera Australia runs it, and it lasts 2.5 hours. It also has no reviews yet and is not refundable. The listing says children under 6 are not suited, and that fireworks views are not guaranteed and may be partly blocked. The listing does not state a group size.

Step 6: Fill the other holiday nights with a harbour dinner
The rest of the holiday week suits a harbour dinner, a ferry ride or a beach day. If you want a meal on the water on another night, the harbour dinner cruise with a 3, 4 or 5-course menu starts from €80.94 per person. It has a 4.4 rating from 1,086 reviews on GetYourGuide. Captain Cook Cruises runs it, and it leaves from King Street Wharf No. 1 at Darling Harbour. You can cancel free up to 24 hours before.
Drinks and transfers cost extra, the listing does not state a group size, and the dress code is smart casual. Check that your date is on sale before you plan around it. All three tours are compared in the table in Step 5.

Our page on a sydney harbour nye cruise lists the dinner cruises, including New Year's Eve ones. For daytime cruises, see our harbour cruises guide, and for more ways to cover several sights, our Sydney attraction passes guide helps.
If you do it yourself, buy a ferry ride with your Opal card and walk the harbour at sunset. A tour only adds a seat and a meal.
Book a New Year's Eve or holiday cruise
You can do most of this yourself, because free park spots show the fireworks. A tour only adds a seat, food and a dry spot, and for Christmas Day itself the free options in Step 2 do the job. Ratings and review counts are GetYourGuide's own and come from the tour card. Prices are "from" per person on GetYourGuide, 25 October 2026.
