What to do at Bondi Beach
The best things to do at Bondi Beach are the coastal walk, a swim at the Icebergs pool and a surf lesson. The walk is free. The pool costs A$10 for an adult.
- Bondi to Coogee coastal walk: free, about 6 km along the cliffs.
- Bondi Icebergs pool: adult A$10, child A$7, family A$30. A sauna is included, for 15 minutes at most.
- Surf lesson: 2 hours for beginners, from €62, board and wetsuit included.
- Whale watching from the cliffs: humpback whales pass Sydney from about May to November.
Why Bondi Beach is so well known
Bondi is known for three things: its long beach, its ocean pool and its surf. The Icebergs pool has lifeguards on patrol and a sauna.
Bondi is also where the coastal walk to Coogee starts. And the Bondi surf lesson we list has more than 1,000 reviews on GetYourGuide.
Getting to Bondi from the city
Take the train to Bondi Junction, then a bus to the beach. There is no train to the beach itself: the Eastern Suburbs line ends at Bondi Junction.
Buses 333, 380 and 381 link Bondi Junction and Bondi Beach. A travel site puts the ride at about 12 to 15 minutes in normal traffic; we found no official time.
Pay with an Opal card or a contactless bank card. Our page on getting around Sydney explains the fares. If you drive, plan your parking at Bondi Beach before you go.
Swimming safely: flags, lifeguards and sharks
Swim only between the red and yellow flags. If no flags are up, do not swim. That is the rule Waverley Council gives for Bondi.
Lifeguards are on duty every day: 6:00 to 19:00 from October to April, and 7:00 to 17:30 from May to September. We could not open the council page to confirm the hours, so check it on the day.
New South Wales has shark nets at 51 beaches between Newcastle and Wollongong, from 1 September to 30 April. We did not find a list of which Sydney beaches have them.
After rain, Beachwatch advises checking the water for colour, debris and smells before you swim.
Water activities: surfing, snorkelling and the sea baths
Bondi Beach activities on the water are surfing and the ocean pool. A 2-hour beginner surf lesson at Bondi costs from €62.
The Icebergs pool is usually closed on Thursdays for cleaning. It may open on summer Thursdays when the tides allow. For pool conditions, call +61 2 9130 4804.
For snorkelling, Sydney.com lists Shelly Beach as a free spot. It is not at Bondi.
Walks and sights near Bondi: the coastal walk, Aboriginal rock art and nearby beaches
The best walk near Bondi is the coastal walk to Coogee. It passes Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly beaches.
A travel guide from 21 October 2026 says part of the path near North Bronte is closed after a rockfall. Waverley Council has not confirmed it, so check with the council before you go.
From May to November, look out for whales from the clifftops between Bondi and Coogee.
Aboriginal rock art tours at Bondi
One tour visits the Aboriginal rock engraving site at Bondi Golf Diggers, with an Aboriginal guide. It runs in July only, during whale season, from €88.
Tours that include Bondi: compare harbour, bus and private options
For most people, the small-group half day is the best tour with Bondi. It costs from €96, with hotel pickup, and takes 4 hours.
Bondi is one stop of several on every tour we list. Check the comparison table for what else is on each route.
- Small group: the half day from €96, or the new 6-hour tour from €125 with a Harbour Bridge walk.
- Bus and cruise: from €154, with a buffet lunch cruise on the harbour.
- Private: from €273 per person, for groups of up to 11.
Food, markets and facilities
At the Icebergs pool you can hire a towel or a locker for A$5 each. The surf school includes change rooms, an outdoor shower and a safe place for your things.
Lunch is not included on the private tour or the new small-group tour. The 6-hour tour gives you free time at Bondi to buy a bite.

Tips for Bondi Beach
Tour or on your own?
On your own is cheap: train to Bondi Junction, then bus 333, 380 or 381. A tour adds hotel pickup and the harbour sights.
Mind Thursdays
The Icebergs pool is usually closed on Thursdays for cleaning.
Check the coastal walk
Part of the path near North Bronte is reported closed. Check Waverley Council before you go.
If your plans change
All four tours have free cancellation, as listed on GetYourGuide.
