An adult pays at most A$19.30 a day from Monday to Thursday, and A$9.65 on Friday to Sunday. From the airport, the train to Central is quick, but it adds a station fee of A$18.61.

Airport to the city

The train is the fastest way from the airport to the city. It runs often, from about 5:00 to midnight.

But the airport stations charge a fee on top of the fare: A$18.61 for an adult. The daily and weekly caps do not cover it. In the 2026 Sydney Travel Cost Study, the train from the airport to Central cost about A$23 one way for an adult at peak time, station fee included.

Not sure which area to pick? Our guide Where to stay in Sydney compares six.

Airport transfers to Sydney hotels

A shared shuttle costs from €13 and takes you to your hotel without train changes. The door-to-door shuttle is priced per group, which suits families with bags.

Sydney Airport taxi

A taxi from an airport rank to the city centre costs a flat A$60, or A$80 for a maxi taxi. That includes tolls and levies. The flat fare does not apply to booked cars, and trips outside the city area are metered.

Uber at Sydney Airport

At the international terminal (T1), UberX picks up at Rank C, outside Arrivals Hall B. You give the driver a six-digit PIN. At T2 it is the Priority Pick-up Zone, and at T3 it is the kerb at Arrivals. You pay the price quoted when you book.

How to pay: Opal card and contactless

Pay with an Opal card or a contactless bank card, phone or watch. Tap on when you board and tap off when you leave. If you forget to tap off, you pay the highest fare for that trip.

Fares are capped. An adult pays at most A$19.30 a day from Monday to Thursday, A$9.65 a day from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, and A$50 a week. Trains, metro, buses and light rail are 30% cheaper off-peak.

If you buy or top up an Opal card at an airport station, the smallest top-up is A$35. A bank card avoids that.

Getting around the city: train, metro, light rail, bus and ferry

Trains and the metro are the fastest way across the city. A new metro line, Sydenham to Bankstown, opens on Friday 30 October 2026. City metro stations include Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal and Central.

Ferries are the best way to see the harbour. With a ferry ride and a zoo pass, Taronga Zoo is a 12-minute trip from Circular Quay Wharf 4. A ferry to Manly costs about A$9 one way: check the Trip Planner.

For Sydney Fish Market, take the L1 light rail to Wentworth Park. The new market opened in January 2026, but its ferry wharf is not open yet. For Bondi Beach, take the train to Bondi Junction, then bus 333, 380 or 381.

Metro to Darling Harbour

The metro has no station called Darling Harbour. On the metro station list, Barangaroo is the closest.

Walking and hop-on hop-off sightseeing

The city centre is easy to walk. Walking across the Harbour Bridge is free. For the view from the top of the arch, book the Sydney Harbour BridgeClimb.

Ferries and buses also reach the Spit to Manly walk Sydney is known for, and the Bondi to Coogee path.

For a seat and a guide, the Big Bus has two routes and 23 stops. Our guide to Sydney city tours compares it with walks and guided tours.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis wait at ranks and you can hail them on the street. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber show a price before you book.

Taxi fares in Sydney and how to estimate them

The NSW taxi fare regulator sets the highest fares for street and rank taxis, under its Fares Order from 1 June 2026. A passenger service levy of A$1.32 may be added. If you pay by card, the surcharge is at most 5%.

We found no price per kilometre, so we give no estimate. From the airport, the A$60 flat fare to the city is the easy number to remember.

Day trips on your own

The Blue Mountains are the easiest day trip by train. The express train to Katoomba takes about 90 minutes, and the Three Sisters walk at Echo Point is free.

The Hunter Valley is about 2 hours by road. Port Stephens is about 2.5 hours north on the M1. Canberra is about 3 hours by car, or about 4.5 hours on the daily direct train. For Wollongong, check the Trip Planner for train times.

Start early so you are not rushed. For guided days out, see our day trips from Sydney guide.

When a rental car makes sense

You do not need a car in the city. A car makes sense for the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens or a slow few days in the Blue Mountains.

The Blue Mountains take about 90 minutes by car or by express train, so a car only pays off for many stops. To drive on the beach at Stockton Bight near Port Stephens, you need a Worimi beach vehicle permit.

South of the city, the Grand Pacific Drive runs 140 km along the coast to Nowra, past Wollongong. It starts at the Royal National Park, which charges A$12 per car per day.

For the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens or a slow few days in the Blue Mountains, a car gives you the most freedom.
