How to do the walk on your own

The Bondi Beach hike is easy to do on your own, and it costs nothing. Start at Bondi Beach and follow the cliff path south to Coogee.

Walking guides give it as about 6 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. Bring a hat, sunscreen and water.

The walk is one of many free things to do in Sydney.

Sydney hiking tours

If you want a guide, two hiking tours walk the same path with lunch at the end, from €376 for up to two people. A shorter whale walk with an Aboriginal guide runs in July.

The Coogee to Bondi beach walk: the route in either direction

You can walk it both ways. From Bondi, you pass Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly beaches before Coogee. From Coogee, you pass the same beaches in reverse and finish at the Bondi Icebergs pool.

After the walk, see our guide to Bondi Beach attractions for the pool, the surf and the food.

A shorter option: the Bondi to Bronte beach walk

For a shorter walk, stop at Bronte. We found no official distance for this part. Note that the path near North Bronte is reported closed.

Bus from Coogee back to Bondi Beach

To get back, use the Opal Travel app or the Trip Planner to find the next bus. From Bondi Junction, buses 333, 380 and 381 run to Bondi Beach.

For fares and Opal cards, see our page on getting around Sydney.

Is the coastal walk open?

Most of the walk is open, but check before you go. A travel guide from 21 October 2026 says parts of North Bronte remain closed after a rockfall, with no date to reopen.

We could not open the Waverley Council page to confirm this. Check it on the day.

Further south, Randwick Council says its part from Clovelly to South Coogee is 4.5 km. It is wheelchair and pram friendly, except at Gordons Bay. It closes when the Malabar rifle range is in use.

Whale watching from the clifftops

Yes, you can spot whales from the walk. Humpback whales pass Sydney from about May to November, and the Bondi to Coogee clifftops are one of the lookouts Sydney.com names.

The peak is late June to early July. In October and November, mothers with calves swim south, slower and closer to the shore.

The Spit to Manly walk and Sydney's other coastal walks

Sydney has more coastal walks with sea views. Sydney.com names these lookouts:

  • Grotto Point and Arabanoo Lookout
  • North Head, on the Fairfax Walk from Manly
  • The Federation Cliff Walk
  • The South Head Heritage Trail
  • Cape Solander, in Kamay Botany Bay National Park
